The last time news came out regarding this cult classic game was when the game went under the knife, receiving the remake treatment back in 2024.
According to Nada Group, Lolipop Chainsaw RePOP saw cumulative series sales surpassing 1.5 million units, no small feat for an almost two-decade-old title. The game's success has even spawned an upcoming anime. With so much hype surrounding the upcoming sequel, a look back at the 2012 original is needed. It's time to unpack what made the OG title so unique, how that magic can be translated into the sequel, and what horror developers looking to make new games can learn from the hack-and-slash zombie romp.
This sequel is said to build upon its predecessor, which is, by all accounts, great news considering the 2012 original has a massive following simply in love with the OG game's aesthetics. Lollipop Chainsaw burst onto the scene back in 2012, serving as an outlier to the horror game genre. There wasn't really anything like it, save maybe for the 2013 Deadpool game that brought the same kind of vulgarity. You play as an 18-year-old high school student named Juliet Starling, a bubbly character who's a cheerleader by day and zombie slayer by night. We meet Starling on the day of her birthday, heading out to celebrate with her beloved boyfriend, Nick Carlyle, when suddenly, her fictional Californian town is overrun by zombies. Long story short, Carlyle’s is bitten, and his head is cut off to stop the infection from spreading.
What better way to keep Carlyle where Starling can see him by performing magic to keep him alive and clipping his decapitated head to her belt? From there, what ensues is a bloody good time. You must rid your world of zombies, brought about by an emo classmate named Swan who opens up a portal to the "Rotten World" where all the zombies came from, and defeat even more powerful zombie elementals called "Dark Purveyors" modeled after different music genres.
Combat is fast-paced, combo-heavy, gory, and tons of fun. Players wield pom poms and a lethal chainsaw that does massive damage to a horde of zombies if used correctly. Blood, rotting flesh, and guts serve as the background for Starling's adventure. She's really unfazed by it all, popping cartwheels and flips throughout combat while casually conversing with the decapitated head of her boyfriend.
The game serves as a unique take on the zombie genre that has been borderline run into the ground. Dialogue is witty, character designs are flashy and colorful, and there's a dark humor surrounding everything that makes the game feel light despite the gory subject matter. The horror game landscape back when Lollipop Chainsaw launched really indicates how ahead of its time this title truly was.
