Like any open-world RPG, The Blood of Dawnwalker offers players a wide variety of upgrades in their skill trees, which can be overwhelming at the start. It becomes even more confusing because of the upgrading mechanics that require leveling up, spending skill points, and time segments. On top of that, there's no way to respec because spending time segments permanently advances time. So, it's important to know exactly where you're putting your skill points and time segments when upgrading skills. In this guide, I'll provide the best skills to level up early in The Blood of Dawnwalker, giving options that improve combat, exploration, or open paths to better skills later.
Upgrading skills helps Coen a lot during his journey to save his family. It doesn't just add to his combat abilities; it also improves his overall survivability and open-world exploration. After testing them across multiple playthroughs, I recommend leveling up these skills first:
Endless Effort is one of the best perks to upgrade in The Blood of Dawnwalker because Stamina is a big part of the game's combat. All your attacks and defensive mechanics require using Stamina, especially if you're playing on Omniblock, which automatically blocks enemies' attacks regardless of the direction. The first two levels of the Endless Effort perk only cost skill points, but the last two levels cost skill points and time segments.
Vigour is another important perk early, mainly because of the two things it provides. The first is making Coen more tanky so he can take more hits. That allows Coen to face stronger enemies and not get one-shot. More importantly, upgrading Vigour at least once opens the way to both the Second Skin I and II perks, allowing Coen to wear any gear you want on him.
Staying in the Swordmastery skill tree, upgrade Charge to unlock an offensive ability that allows Coen to quickly dash to the target's location, inflicting heavy damage. What I like about this ability is that Coen doesn't need a weapon to use it; you can still use it at night when Coen fights with his claws.
Using abilities is a big part of the game's combat, so it makes sense to upgrade perks that enhance them and give Coen access to more of them. Sustained Focus expands the number of abilities Coen can use during combat.
Just like Vigour, Endless Hunger increases Coen's HP during the night. The perk adds one health segment to Coen's HP, giving him extra survivability. Endless Hunger sets the tone for future perks that automatically regenerate one segment of Coen's HP, which keeps getting better the more health segments Coen has.
Since the game features a large open world, Coen will spend a lot of time traveling between Quests and points of interest. Unlocking Shapeshift early gives Coen Haste, allowing him to travel faster during the night.
