At this point, we’ve all played at least one Pokémon game, right? Some of us have played them all and have no plans of stopping anytime soon.
However, for many players, it’s very tempting to see these games as a super straight line, where you catch a few Pokémon and then go from gym to gym, wiping out trainers with your over-leveled team, smashing through the league, and finishing in record time.
And while players can play however they wish, the games are surely not meant to be played that way. These kinds of RPGs reward players who take their time, go back to previous areas, and dig up secrets and hidden items.
Simply by backtracking a little, or paying more attention to the environment, searching in every patch of grass, you can easily double or triple the length of these games, just by keeping an open mind and not rushing through everything. So let’s look at some Pokémon titles that really reward you for taking it a bit more slowly!
This is one that’s been with me for decades and is probably pretty well known in the Pokémon community.
In the Gen 3 games, after defeating the first gym, you’ll be given a package to deliver to Slateport and a letter to be given to Steven Stone. You’ll find Steven in the cave near Dewford Town, after which you can sail to Slateport. Of course, many forget about the reward promised to you, only grabbing the EXP Share from Devon’s president after looping around Meteor Falls.
If you take a quick couple of minutes, you can go straight back to Rustboro after Dewford and get the EXP Share before you’ve even beaten the 2nd gym! This is ridiculously useful, especially if you’re training up something terrible like a Nincada.
