5 Single-Player FPS Masterpieces Forgotten By Time

History only remembers the winners, and only a fraction of them. That extends to gaming, which tends to reduce the FPS genre to a few standout releases per era. Over the decades, many fantastic FPS games were showered with adoration and then promptly wiped from our collective memories, and a few titles didn't even get to enjoy the first half of that journey. As they say, time is a cruel mistress, and these masterpieces succumb to her whip.

Personally, I love revisiting forgotten shooters from yesteryear, especially ones released in the late '90s and 2000s. As the genre's rules were still being codified, this period produced many experimental FPS games that were ahead of the curve in certain ways, and many of them have an AA charm mostly absent from modern releases.

I'm not saying these FPS games hold up perfectly today, but they were great or groundbreaking for their eras or platforms. That said, I think they're all still playable and enjoyable.

This might be controversial – Killzone: Mercenary has the best campaign in the franchise, at least if we take everything into account. Don't get me wrong, Killzone 2 and 3 are overall superior if you just want to power through the main missions once; however, Mercenary complements its short 9-level campaign by introducing secondary contracts that change how you replay the missions. This simple addition extends a 5-hour story into 20+ hours of pretty high-quality content.

The PS Vita was never popular, dooming Killzone: Mercenary to immediate obscurity. Sure, it was one of the console's most visible games, but that also makes it one of the most recognizable names associated with a flop. Infamously, Sony plans to shut down the PS Vita Store in July 2027, ensuring all of its games become even more underrated, overlooked, and forgotten.

There are ways to play Mercenary without a Vita, but Guerrilla Cambridge made ample use of the touchscreen and rear touch panel, so you cannot really get the same experience. The game didn't perfectly suit the console's small thumbsticks either, so we never could fully appreciate Killzone: Mercenary at its best.

The '90s delivered so many wild FPS games that are barely talked about nowadays, which kind of makes sense since many of these projects have archaic features that make them slightly difficult to revisit. Fortunately, on PC, DOOM defined the genre's controls, making most early shooters somewhat replayable all thesedecades later.

Realms of the Haunting stood out because it refused to be just another DOOM clone, instead opting to smash ideas from that masterpiece with point-and-click adventure games. You play Adam Randall, an ordinary man investigating the mysterious death of his estranged priest father; naturally, his search leads to a gothic mansion in Cornwall and, eventually, a multiverse war. It's all ridiculous; it's all awesome. You are accompanied by a psychic named Rebecca, who acts as both a guide and a puzzle partner.
