Permadeath is one of those Marmite mechanics that you either love or hate. Some people enjoy the increased jeopardy that comes with the knowledge that one wrong move could have a lasting impact on a playthrough, while others, like me, dislike the fact that a character they've sunk time and effort into developing can be snuffed out at a moment's notice. The developers of Star Wars Zero Company seem well aware of the mechanic's divisive nature, as they opted to give us the ability to disable permadeath at the start of a new playthrough.
It's important to note that permadeath is enabled by default, with the devs making it quite clear that the game was designed around the idea that operators can die. As a result, there's more to Star Wars Zero Company permadeath than just personal preference, with a few of the game's systems built firmly around the permadeath mechanic. In fact, there are certain situations where you can actually benefit from having one of your operators die in battle, which is why you may want to think twice before disabling permadeath in SWZC.
Having completed the main story with permadeath off and then starting a new playthrough with it on, I recommend playing Star Wars Zero Company with permadeath enabled. Although I usually dislike the mechanic, having a junior operator die in battle will improve the bonds between all of the survivors. As a result, increasing the bond level with a new recruit to get a few easy stat boosts through Cross Training and then letting them die in a mission allowed me to boost the stats of three crewmates (my team usually consisted of Hawks, Jae, and Kabb, together with one sacrificial lamb) a lot faster than running a regular team of four. Playing with permadeath enabled also encouraged me to think a bit more about my actions, which, given the heavy emphasis that Zero Company places on tactics, enhanced the overall experience a little.
After starting my permadeath playthrough, I actually found that it's quite difficult to have an operator die once you've levelled them up a little. For them to die permanently, they need to pick up three injuries, but the game lets you heal injuries once you unlock the medbay, so unless you're playing on the hardest difficulty setting or are actively neglecting your team by choosing not to heal them at the medbay, you have a decent amount of control over whether members of your team die. In the event that one of them does kick the bucket, you'll unlock the "A Natural Part of Life" Trophy / Achievement and will be immortalized on the memorial at The Den.
