Control Resonant is a brutal game that can put up way more of a challenge than you're probably expecting. While the original game wasn't easy, Resonant's switch to melee combat is far more punishing for those who make mistakes or get too greedy. Thankfully, there is a way to improve Dylan's own power to ensure you are always the one with the upperhand, but it's a little tricky to understand at first glance.
This is Aberrant Strength, the core of how powerful Dylan is and the main factor that determines if you're even capable of killing specific enemies you come across. If you're just starting out or simply confused about how this mechanic works, here's everything you need to know about Aberrant Strength.
Simply put, Aberrant Strength is a number that determines how much damage all of Dylan's weapon forms and combos will do to enemies in combat. This number is displayed in the hub area called The Gap whenever you look at your different weapon forms or combo finishers. Increasing your Aberrant Strength will also improve how much Falter damage all of his weapons do in combat.
Falter acts as a stagger meter, represented by a yellow bar under the enemy's health. Once this fills up, the enemy will either be open for an instant-kill Execution move or become stunned for several seconds if they're a boss. Since performing an execution enhanced Dylan's damage for a few seconds, improving your Falter output can make combat way easier.
Additionally, the enemies also function on a level scaling system which is displayed by a number next to their name. This can be a bit confusing at their levels will be in single digits, while your Aberrant Strength can go way beyond 100. To clear this up, think of the number next to an enemy's health bar in increments of ten. So if a Hiss enemy is level 5, think of it as Aberrant Strength 50 instead. This means that if you want to match or be above that foe, you will want to be at least Aberrant Strength 50 or higher.
Typically, you want to be at least 10 Aberrant Strength over an enemy's level; otherwise, they will have a skull instead of a number. This skull means they're much stronger than you, and while they can be killed, you will take a ton of damage from them.
Finally, the strength of the world itself will increase whenever you defeat a Resonant. Killing one of the key bosses will raise the Aberrant Strength of all the enemies in the game, across all zones, and add new enemy types to areas they previously weren't. Make sure you have done what you want in an area before taking on a Resonant; otherwise, you'll be facing a stronger collection of foes going forward.
Now that you understand what Aberrant Strength is, how do we actually go about raising it so we can fight all these paranatural horrors? The only way to increase your Aberrant Strength is to unlock new upgrades for your Primary Form, Secondary Form, and Combo Finishers. It doesn't matter if you unlock upgrades for a weapon you're currently using or not; anything tied to your weapons will improve your Aberrant Strength for the entire arsenal.
