EA Sports FC has often been accused of focusing too much on Ultimate Team, while leaving other modes out in the cold. EA Sports FC 27 bucks that trend, making every mode feel like the star player.
When we reviewed EA FC 26, we called it the “best football game in years,” praising the superb gameplay even if there wasn’t much ambition away from the grass. With the follow-up, EA Sports has gone in the opposite direction, playing it safe on the pitch while shaking things up behind the scenes.
Nearly every mode has received plenty of love, bringing meaningful changes that are a noticeable improvement on last year. Although its biggest swing doesn’t quite hit the mark, EA FC 27 is the most complete game in the franchise.
EA FC 27’s marquee addition is The Grounds, the open-world mode that many fans have wanted for years after seeing success with ‘The City’ in the NBA series. Serving as an extension of the Clubs mode, you are dropped into a soccer-themed city, packed with minigames, cute references, and even real football players like Kylian Mbappé to talk to.
As you explore, you’ll come across pitches that let you jump straight into a variety of fun side activities alongside some of the other 99 players in the lobby. These range from 5v5 Rush matches to wackier games like Balloon Ball, where you need to shoot directly at other players to eliminate them. Each one earns XP to level up your created player used in Clubs matches.
There’s not a bad one in the bunch, but the novelty wears off quickly and they soon become repetitive. It’s hard to imagine minigames like Bocce Ball, where you have to pass the ball through moving rings, still being played in a few months’ time.
