The Volunteer is an optional quest in The Witcher 3 that puts Geralt in an unusual situation involving a singing troll. To start the quest, make your way west of Oxenfurt to White Eagle Fort, where you will encounter the troll. After conversing with him, Geralt will have to decide his fate, with your choice determining whether you fight the creature or help him with a rather unusual request.
When you first speak to Trollololo, you will discover that he believes he is part of King Radovid's army and considers himself a Redanian soldier. He explains that he was tasked with guarding the boats from peasants who might return to reclaim them.
However, when the peasants eventually arrived, Trollololo tried to help but ended up killing everyone. Geralt will ask what happened to the bodies of the peasants and the soldiers, and Trollololo will admit that he ate them all.
This conversation triggers a choice where you must decide whether to kill the Rock Troll or let him go.
If you choose to kill Trollololo, you will have to fight him. The Rock Troll has very tough skin and can block most of your sword attacks while holding a defensive stance, so relying entirely on regular sword strikes can make the fight more difficult.
Use the spells in your arsenal to help deal with him and look for openings to attack when he is vulnerable. Once you kill the troll, you can loot his body to obtain Monster Blood, Cave Troll Liver, Troll Hide, and several other items. You will gain some XP and the quest will come to an end.
If you decide to let Trollololo go, Geralt will explain that he understands the situation because of the rules of wartime. Trollololo will then ask Geralt to bring him some paint so he can paint the Redanian bird, which is usually displayed on shields.
If you already have paint in your inventory, you can give it to him immediately. Otherwise, travel to Oxenfurt and purchase some from the merchant there.
