A 72-year-old Pokemon collector who planted a GPS tracker on a card delivery van was sentenced to 90 days of GPS monitoring himself.
Kent Kubasta first made headlines when he pleaded no contest to secretly tracking a woman’s van to follow where fresh card stock was headed. The case landed as Pokemon’s hotly anticipated 30th anniversary set had collectors queuing outside stores, fueling reports of fistfights and mail theft. Now, an Ohio court has handed down his sentence.
According to court documents, Kubasta received 12 months of community control, Ohio’s term for probation, and for the first 90 days, he will be monitored by GPS.
The judge also ordered him to sever all contact with the woman, pay a $500 fine plus court costs, and cover a $25 monthly supervision fee. Breaking any of those terms could land him in jail for six months.
The driver, described in court documents as “a carrier/vendor of Pokemon cards,” found the Spytec device on her van on June 18 while making a delivery to Walmart. Kubasta initially pleaded not guilty to illegal use of a tracking device, but changed his plea to no contest at an August 31 pre-trial hearing.
The court records did not explain what he planned to do with the delivery information. Since then, demand for cards has continued to grow, as the latest expansion, released on September 16, includes 30 rare Pikachu variants, with one in every booster pack.
Randy Kendall, manager of Operation Fandom in Wooster, where the complaint was filed, told Fox 8 that Pokemon “is absolutely the hottest thing going” and that the cards are among the store’s best-selling products.
