Resident Evil has been a smash hit in theaters ever since it released, becoming easily the highest rated video game adaptation of all time, and another fantastic horror movie for Zach Cregger to add to his CV. It's also a great thing for Capcom to have under its belt too, as we all know what a successful video game adaptation does to the sales of the games they're adapting.
Yes, just like with other video game adaptations like Fallout, the Resident Evil movie has had quite a significant impact on the number of sales that a bunch of Resident Evil games have seen recently. First reported by Rhys Elliot from Alinea Analytics, it seems as though the release of the movie, along with a timely sale, has massively boosted the number of sales of a few Resident Evil games.
In the Twitter post, Elliot reveals that the daily sales of Resident Evil games on PS5 "roughly doubled" a couple of days before the movie came out, helped along by the Resident Evil sale that Capcom had held beforehand. Once the movie had released and the discount was removed, the movie still ended up pushing people towards the game.
According to Elliot, both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 "gained another50 to 65 percent in PS5 copies, even though most of them were sold on sale. If you go by Steam numbers, the effect of the movie only increased sales over there by between 11 and 14 percent. However, engagement apparently rose across the entire Resident Evil catalog of games, which shows us that the movie actually had existing fans of Resident Evil games jumping back in to play them, rather than drive sales as much this time around. Nevertheless, the movie did help, and Capcom got a lovely little boost thanks to Cregger's brilliance.
