The Witcher 3 is getting Xbox Play Anywhere support when the remaster drops, meaning that anyone who bought the game on Xbox can swap between console and PC with ease.
This essentially means that anyone who has The Witcher 3 on Xbox is about to get a PC copy for free. So, if you wanted to swap to PC after all these years, and you have an Xbox copy of the game, you won't need to put any more money down.
Interestingly, CD Projekt Red had mentioned Xbox Play Anywhere support for The Witcher 3 when the remaster was announced. However, it was only mentioned in the Xbox Wire post, not in the announcement made on its own website, so many of us missed it until now.
The deal has now been reconfirmed on CDPR's Japanese social media, and it's the first time many are realising that they can start playing on PC at no extra cost.
Play Anywhere support doesn't just let you play on PC. You should be able to seamlessly swap between the two platforms, picking up right where you left off. This is handy, since you can choose to go back to relaxing on the couch if playing on PC isn't for you.
However, be careful if you start to dip your toe into the PC modding scene. The Witcher 3 has a huge library of mods available to you (although this will likely have to be updated for the remaster's release), and if you start to mess about with them, you will struggle going back to playing on Xbox. Best-case scenario, trying to load a modded save on console will just cause all of your modded content to disappear. Worst case, the save won't load at all.
Also, before you make the leap to PC, make sure you can actually run it. The remaster is going to increase the PC system requirements, which includes requiring double the RAM we needed before. Just because you can run it now, that doesn't mean you'll be fine on launch day.
The Witcher 3 Remastered will launch next week on September 29.
