BlizzCon 2026 gave us a glimpse at the future of some of the biggest IPs in the entire gaming world. We got a teaser for an open-world StarCraft game, our first look at World of Warcraft: Forever, and surprisingly, Diablo 5 was also announced, with a release date scheduled for 2029. While we only know a few small details regarding the story and gameplay, the more interesting discussion has nothing to do with the game itself but what it means for Diablo 4 in the years leading up to the sequel's launch.
As sad, and perhaps even frustrating, as it may be to hear, Blizzard has said that there will be no further major expansions for Diablo 4, as the team's resources are allocated to Diablo 5. This isn't exactly a new concept for live-service games, with Path of Exile being a great recent example of a game's sequel putting pressure on the original, but in this case, the fact we still have to wait three years makes the lack of significant content sting a lot harder. There is a very real scenario where the player base simply moves on until the mainline sequel launches, which makes the launch of the sequel all the more important for Blizzard and is why such an early teaser may do more harm than good.
Live-service games aren't everyone's cup of tea right now, and it seems like every other day we are seeing a new game close and another dozen to take its place. The market is complex, and even more so for bigger names like Blizzard, who have been creating live-service content for decades across a range of titles, so it is very important to decide when and how to move on to the next project. And for Diablo, it seems the cutoff point has come much sooner than many expected, and we will be heading into a new era for the franchise before the end of the decade.

On the surface, a new game sounds good, as it gives people something to look forward to, and more content for your favorite games and IPs is always going to be a plus. However, the release of Diablo 5 comes with a major downside: major updates and expansions for Diablo 4 are going to be coming to an end. That means no big DLC drops, no sweeping overhauls, and only a few seasonal changes and balance updates to keep the game up and running while the sequel steals the spotlight, which is a real bummer given how long the wait is until the next game.
There is a very real scenario where the player base simply moves on until the mainline sequel launches, which makes the launch of the sequel all the more important for Blizzard and is why such an early teaser may do more harm than good.
There will still be a couple of additions in the meantime, like the Amazon class coming next year, but aside from that, I have a hard time imagining we are going to get anything meaningful for the next three years. Also, the reveal feels all the more odd, given how we only just got Lord of Hatred, which rounded out the Age of Hatred story arc, and many players were expecting to see the next set of expansions for the game going into BlizzCon. Instead, they got the complete opposite news that Diablo 4 is a thing of the past, and that if they want some shiny new toys to play with, then they are going to need to hold off and mark their calendars well in advance.
