PS5's New QSSR AI Upscaling Tech Should Make For Some Interesting Xbox Comparisons

As you may have seen over at our sister site Push Square today, Sony has announced that AI upscaling is coming to the base PS5 in the form of something called QSSR, which is very similar to the PSSR upscaling on the PS5 Pro.

In a nutshell, the idea here is that QSSR analyses game images on a pixel-by-pixel basis, and then applies AI upscaling to essentially add clarity to details that would otherwise look more blurry. You can see an example of this from Ghost of Yotei up above, which is one of two games that the tech is debuting for (the other being Marvel's Wolverine).

Here's the key bit from an Xbox perspective - Sony says that the technology "will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers" going forward, which we assume includes third-party developers as well. That means we might be getting more variations in image quality between Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro in the future, which ultimately should make comparison footage much more interesting between the two.

"Since the launch of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PS5 Pro, players and developers have asked whether similar image-quality improvements could be brought to the PS5 console. PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible."

That said, we're not talking massive improvements here. The footage above (and below) shows some improved visuals using QSSR for sure, but if you look at it from a glance, you'll probably struggle to notice the difference.

Digital Foundry even mentions that "there remains a big divide between the same game running QSSR on standard PS5 and PSSR on Pro", so nobody should be expecting a huge leap between PS5 and Xbox Series X based on this technology. In other words, there's no need to get FOMO as an Xbox owner if third-parties start integrating this on PS5.

It does potentially hint at what's to come in Xbox's future though, with AI upscaling almost certainly set to be a key feature of the Project Helix console. If this tech ends up proving popular with both developers and players (which it seemingly already is), don't be surprised if Xbox takes it to the next level in the next generation.

Interesting stuff! We'll leave you with another look at QSSR in action on the PS5 down below.
