Mutagens are far more important to your build than you might think, which is why we've created a guide to fully explain Mutagens in The Witcher 3. Mutagens can be acquired in four different ways:
The most common way to get Mutagens (especially early game) is through looting monsters. You will mainly get Lesser variants of Red, Blue, and Green from Drowners, Nekkers, Endregas, Harpies, and really anything that's killed by a silver sword. However, Red Mutagens are by far the rarest.
You can purchase "Mutagen Transmutator" formulas from the Merchant at the Perfumery in Beauclair (Blood and Wine). This will allow you to enter your Alchemy menu to craft your own Mutagens thanks to Diagrams, provided you have the necessary ingredients. You can also convert Blue to Red, Red to Green, etc.
In Blood and Wine, you can fully upgrade your Corvo Bianco estate to find an Alchemy Station in the cellar. Inside, you can convert Special Mutagens into lesser ones. For instance, a Wraith Mutagen can become a Lesser Green Mutagen. This is great if you have an abundance of Special Mutagens that you wish to convert.
After "Be It Ever So Humble..." in Blood and Wine, you can find the Mutagenerator at your bed in Corvo Bianco. This allows you to generate a random Greater Mutagen for every 100 kills by interacting with the Mutagenerator in your inventory.
Mutagens are slotted into your Character Skills menu alongside your Attributes and Abilities. You can unlock all four Mutagens at: Level 4, 9, 16, and 28.
To gain further benefits from Mutagens, you need to match the Mutagen color with the Skill color. This will double the effectiveness of the Mutagen.
